Historically, research concluded that that males are more affected by autism than their female counterparts. The large majority of females may not know they are autistic until adulthood as there is a tendency for females with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) to internalise and mask their ‘true selves’ which in turn leads them to be unable to access the necessary support. Flo was diagnosed with ASD in 2022 and I wanted to produce a publication that acknowledges autism through a singular perspective as no two autistic people are the same, but highlighting elements of Flo’s life in order to challenge the stereotypes associated with female autism.
‘Love Letter to My Sister’ is my most personal project yet, it is a physical showcase of my overwhelming love for Flo. This is a resource for both Flo and the wider world; it aims to be a a publication in which she feels comfortable sharing with them to help them gain an insight into the way she works and her day to day life.
As the nature of this book is so personal, I wanted to complete every part of the process myself, much like a love letter would be constructed. Each page is adorned with illustrations and type that have all been drawn by hand with love and care. It is printed onto textured as part of the sensory attraction, it has then been handbound using hand dyed linen thread that corresponds with the book colours. The envelope casing is made from chromatico paper and has found vintage stamps from a personal collection. Each copy is slightly different but are all a representation of my Flo.
The final ‘Love Letter to My Sister’ is an A5 book printed encased in a translucent ‘envelope’ so you can see the contents through the casing, with a reference to Flo having a routine of her favourite magazine being delivered on a Saturday.
‘I love the final book and it sums me up perfectly. I have always wanted to see something like this and to see you (my sister) bring this to life is fabulous. I am so thankful that you are able to share this.’ - Flo
